2009 was an excellent year for walleye fishing on Lake Erie in more ways than one. The quality of this years walleye was up with most fish in the 19" to 24" range from early spring through mid summer. Fishing slowed a bit toward the end of June as it always does during the annual mayfly hatch however good catches were still obtained, it just took a little longer and you had to fish a little harder than in the spring. In late summer we spent more hours trolling as the walleye seemed to spread out heading further north and east seeking cooler, deeper water. Here are a few things to consider when booking your trip. If you like jig fishing and don't mind the cold spring weather then mid-April to about the first week of May is best. Early spring trolling with cranckbaits can prove successful for landing big female post spawn fish. Casting Lake Erie weapons or weight forward spinners usually takes precedence after the jig bite in early May and lasts throughout the summer. Using bottom bouncers provides you with additional poles that sometimes outproduce casting. Trolling, while considered by many as meat fishing can be just as challenging as casting and usually keeps you busy changing lures, trying to figure out what the walleye want to eat and takes place anytime from the end of May on. Flexibility with technique is a must if you want to take home a good catch of fish. Filling your cooler is a priority! Fishing for yellow perch, often regarded by many as the best tasting fish that the great lakes has to offer, begins anytime in July or August and we'll be using the traditional Lake Erie spreader or perch rigs. This provides great action for young children as well as adults.
